Your website is live. You’ve spent time choosing the right colors, finding photos, writing your copy, and making sure everything looks good. But there’s one problem: it isn’t helping you book clients.

Maybe people are visiting your website but never taking the next step. Maybe you’re still answering questions you thought your website would answer for you. Or maybe you can’t point to one specific problem—you just know your website isn’t doing what you hoped it would.

When that happens, it’s easy to assume you need to start over. But before you redesign your entire website, I want you to look at it a little differently.

When I’m creating a website, I think about the journey someone takes from the moment she lands on the site to the moment she decides she’s ready to work with you. Does she understand what you do and how you can help her? Does she trust you? Does she know what to do next? And when she’s ready, is it actually easy to book?

I call this The Client Journey Framework, and it’s a simple way to look beyond how your website looks and start thinking about how it’s actually working for your business.

Here are five questions I would ask.

1. Is Your Message Clear?

Imagine someone discovers your business on Instagram, Pinterest, through a Google search, or because a friend recommended you. She clicks over to your website. Can she quickly understand what you do, who you help, and whether she’s in the right place?

It sounds simple, but this is one of the easiest things to overlook—especially when you’re so close to your own business. You already know what you do, what certain words mean, and how everything in your business fits together. Your website visitor doesn’t.

She shouldn’t have to scroll through half of your homepage or piece together several different statements to figure out what you offer. Take a look at the top of your homepage and ask yourself:

If someone knew nothing about my business before landing here, would she understand what I do and whether it’s for her?

Your website can be beautiful and still leave someone confused. If she doesn’t understand what you do, she probably isn’t going to stick around long enough to become a client.

2. Does She Understand Your Offer?

Once your dream client understands what you do, the next question is whether she understands how you can actually help her.

It can be tempting to fill your services page with everything that’s included, every detail, and every step of your process. Some of that information may be important, but your dream client also needs to understand what your offer means for her.

What does it help her do? What problem does it solve? What will be different after working with you? Is it clear who the service is for?

She shouldn’t finish reading your services page knowing everything that’s included but still wondering, Is this what I need?

Read through the way you describe your offer and ask yourself:

Would my dream client understand how this helps her—not just what she gets?

You don’t have to explain every possible detail. You want to give her enough information to understand the offer and recognize whether it could be the right next step for her.

3. Are You Building Trust?

Even when someone understands what you do and thinks your offer could help her, she may not be ready to book yet. She’s still getting to know you and deciding whether you’re the person she wants to work with.

Your website can help her make that decision. Testimonials from past clients, examples of your work, a simple explanation of your process, and an About page that lets her get to know the person behind the business can all help build that trust.

You don’t need to fill every page with testimonials or spend half your website trying to prove yourself. You simply want to give your dream client enough information to feel comfortable taking the next step.

Look through your website and ask:

Have I given her enough to feel like she knows me and can trust me?

You already know you’re good at what you do. Your dream client is still discovering that.

4. Is the Next Step Clear?

Now imagine she understands what you do, sees how your offer could help her, and feels like she can trust you. She’s interested in working with you.

Does she know what to do next?

This is where websites can make things harder than they need to be. There might be a button to book a call, another to learn more, another to join an email list, another to follow on Instagram, and another to read the blog. None of those things are bad on their own, but when everything is competing for attention, your dream client has to figure out which step she’s supposed to take.

Instead, think about the main action you want someone to take when she’s ready to work with you. Do you want her to fill out an application? Schedule an appointment? Choose a service? Complete a contact form?

Whatever that next step is, make sure it’s easy to find throughout your website.

If your dream client decided she wanted to work with you right now, would she know exactly what to do next?

Your website can have other links and resources. You just don’t want the path to working with you to get lost among them.

5. Is It Easy to Book?

Knowing what to do next is important, but there’s one more thing to check: what happens when she actually tries to do it?

One of my favorite ways to find problems here is to try to hire yourself. Go to your website and pretend you’re a brand-new visitor who has decided she wants to work with you. Start on your homepage and actually go through the process.

Can you find the right service and understand what happens next? Can you easily find the button you need, and does it take you where you expected? If there’s a form, is it easy to complete? Once you submit it, do you know what happens next?

Actually going through the process can uncover things you won’t notice when you’re simply looking at your website. Maybe a button leads to an old page, your form asks for more information than you really need, or you never explain what happens after someone reaches out.

These may seem like small details, but they matter when someone is ready to become a client.

Are you making it as easy as possible for someone who is ready to work with you to take that step?

Your Website May Not Need a Complete Redesign

If you noticed a problem—or several—as you worked through these five questions, don’t immediately add “redo my entire website” to your to-do list.

Your website may simply need a clearer message or an offer that’s easier to understand. You may need to add a few testimonials, make the next step more obvious, or fix something in your booking process.

The important thing is figuring out what actually needs your attention before you start changing everything.

And that’s exactly why I created something to help you do that.
